Snowbird Trip Diary:
RV Trail New York to Florida
Day 23 & 24 - On the Road in
Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi
We are spending 3 nights at Bay Hide Away RV Park in Bay Saint
Louis. It is one of our favorites and it is quiet, off the main
highways, clean and well-kept, with very friendly owners, and all of
the amenities. Rated by Woodall's as the best campground in
Mississippi. It is a couple of miles from the ocean and the Silver
Slipper Casino. Walmart is also just down the road for supplies, and
a propane dealer is nearby. Tuesday is "Seniors' Day" at the Silver
Slipper and has some nice perks including some free slot money and
discounts. Last time we visited, Niki was the
big winner, leaving with $16. This time was Jack's turn and won
enough to cover lunch and still walk away $6 richer. The buffet is
BOGO on Tuesdays and is never anything short of fabulous. We
enjoyed it completely and found not an item we didn't like.
We spent the rest of the day exploring and taking pictures. This
area was completely devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. They
are just now completing final cleanup, road and infrastructure
repair. It is so sad to see the driveways leading to empty lots
where beautiful homes once stood facing the Gulf. Stairways leading
to concrete
foundations with only brush and kudzu growing around it. There are
many, many lots with just pilings that were once thought to be high
enough to boost
the homes that sat on them above any storm surge.
Not so.
We found fishing vessels still sitting in odd places, deposited by
the storm, and too costly to be moved back to the water. There are
only a fraction of the homes rebuilt, and many empty lots are for
sale. Many lots are kept trimmed with for sale signs hoping to
attract new buyers willing to spin the wheel and take the chance.
We visited some of the side roads to the fishing channels in the
area and found the shrimp boats and other fishing ships in operation
but with many more empty dock spaces than we imagine there once
were.
Day 25 is a Travel Day,
heading East for an overnight stop to a new campground, for us, in
Robertsdale, Alabama. We plan to reach there early enough, unhitch,
and make a quick 45 minute side-trip to Pensacola where our mail
forwarding service is holding our mail.
We hope y'all are having a great day,
Niki, Jack, and K.C.
